Despite growing up in an Evangelical tradition suspicious of the visual, 19th-century art critic John Ruskin came to view sight as the most precious of our God-given faculties. How did Ruskin come to believe that the cultivation of vision was an individual moral imperative and the truest test of the health of an entire community or society?
